Become a The Youth Podium Mentor

Speech and debate changes how students think and carry themselves, but only if someone shows them the way in. The Youth Podium pairs experienced student debaters with middle and high schoolers just getting started, often in schools with no team and no coach.

What mentors do

Mentoring is mostly a conversation: walking a student through their first case, running a practice round, explaining what a judge is actually listening for. Sessions are usually virtual, so you can work with a student anywhere in the country. You set the pace, based on your availability and competing demands.

Who can apply

Current high school and college students with experience in speech, debate, or both. You don't need a trophy case. If you've competed for a season, judged novice rounds, or helped run your school's team, you have something worth passing on.

What happens next

A member of our team reads every application and replies by email, whether or not there's a match right away. If you're selected, the short bio you write is what appears on our site alongside the other mentors.
